Do Something

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” ~Martin Luther King~

Recently I listened to part of an interview that Oprah Winfrey did with Sister Joan Chittister. They were talking about the challenges of these times and what you, as one individual can do at this time to shift the world. “What can we do?” Sister Joan said, “do something.” Do something, those words keep playing on a loop in my head. Do Something. “Yes,” I think, “do something that is consistent with who I am and what I am creating in the world.”

Many years ago, while in a seminar, I was tasked with writing the context of my life. It seemed like an impossibly enormous task and the little voice in my head was having a field day going on and on and on about not knowing, and how could I possibly do that. The interesting thing was that when I gave up thinking about it, from my head, and let myself drop down into my heart, the context came through in the form of a song. My context, and I sing this song often, is “I am the Light and the Light is Me, Light Being, Light Being, Being Light. I am the Light, Beauty and Joy, Light Being, Being Light, Light. I am the Light, Magic Abounds, Light Being, Light Being, Being Light. I am the Light, Standing for Truth, Light Being, Being Light. I am the Light, Loving You, Light Being, Light Being, Being Light. I am the Light and the Light is Me, Light Being, Light Being, Being Light.”

Do something. What will we do today? Tomorrow? Each day we can do something that reminds us of who we are, Beings of Light, loving ourselves and each other, being astonished by the beauty and the magic all around. Yes, there is beauty and magic and light and love. Find a way to connect with them. I know you will feel rage and despair. I have and still do. It is important to feel them. I do not ask you to hide those feelings. I ask you to feel them, allow them, inside of the context of your commitment to your Light, to shining and singing, and creating a world that is filled with kindness and compassion, love and light.

Do something. Yesterday we had a family gathering. Jaska, Linzy, Penelope, and I made cookies, working and laughing and making a mess together. Dustin was the tall person reaching something over my head and provided strong mixing hands when Jaska’s got tired. Andy was the strong steady presence. We shared gifts and good food. We laughed and talked, thoroughly enjoying each other.

Today I will keep candles burning all day, a physical reminder of Light and its power. I will sing. I may weep. I will sing some more. I will journey to connect with my own Inner Light and radiate it out, connecting to all the other Light Beings in this country, on this continent, all around the world.

I invite you to join me, Monday, January 20, 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. in a guided journey creating and growing the Web of Light. We will, as Jewel sings, “gather the light darkness most fears.”

It is a challenging and yes, scary time in this country. So today I will sing songs of light and love and reclaiming. I will pray with the Benevolent Ones that watch over me and you. I will be astonished by the beauty and wonder all around. I will light a candle or a dozen candles. And I will remember the words of Mahatma Gandhi: “when I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murders, and for a time, they can seem invincible, but in the end they always fail. Think of it-always.”

Together we are stronger and brighter. Together we will Do Something.

Let me know if you will join me, in person on January 20. I’ll put the tea water on.

With Love and Gratitude,
